In pain and unable to reach the dosage she needed, we faced the daunting task of finding another doctor who would truly listen. After months of waiting for an appointment, Nikki met an endocrinologist—only to be told, without meaningful evaluation, “If you don’t increase your medication, you will die.” Those words still echo in my mind, a reminder of how carelessly they were delivered.
The search continued. Still yet another endocrinologist dismissed Nikki within minutes, claiming there was nothing she could do. I remember sitting in that exam room, tears in my eyes, pleading for help on my daughter’s behalf.
In total, Nikki saw seven endocrinologists before her thyroid levels were finally stabilized.
What ultimately made the difference was not a doctor’s insight, but our family’s persistence. We researched alternative thyroid hormone replacement options ourselves and presented the medication, Tirosint, to her current endocrinologist. Tirosint contains only three inactive ingredients (gelatin, glycerin and water) along with the active ingredient levothyroxine sodium. Reluctantly, the endocrinologist prescribed Tirosint. For the first time, Nikki was able to tolerate the dosage she needed.
It is striking to realize that Tirosint had been FDA-approved since 2007, years before Nikki’s thyroid condition, yet not a single doctor had suggested it. It took our awareness, advocacy, and insistence to finally secure a treatment that worked.
Today, Nikki continues to take Tirosint. With awareness, Nikki recognized that different dose capsules of Tirosint can cause different negative effects. One capsule in particular causes Nikki’s eczema to flare up. Again, no health care provider, not even a dermatologist, acknowledged this.
We remain vigilant, keeping track of new dosage options that may further improve her treatment. This journey has taught us that awareness is not just about questioning—it is about advocating, researching, and refusing to give up until the right solution is found.
