JOURNEY THROUGH EFFEXOR

By Nikki and Anne Heart ♥  July 24, 2025

*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Nikki’s eyes.

Nikki's Story: Journey through Effexor

In the spring of 2013, under the guidance of a new healthcare provider, Effexor was added to my existing regimen of three medications. Her thoughtful and reassuring approach reignited my hope that, with careful consideration, we could identify a treatment path that truly supported my wellness.

Given the debilitating side effects I had experienced with previously prescribed SSRIs, she introduced a different class of antidepressants: serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). With confidence and conviction, she shared why Effexor, in particular, might be a better fit for my physiology.

My provider noted that I was just very sensitive to medications, and I needed to take a very small dosage for it to work without negative effects.

To achieve this, I was advised to open the capsule and carefully remove a portion of its contents. In pursuit of consistency and safety, I meticulously counted just five beads per day.

For the month of May, I adhered to this regimen with hope and determination. Yet despite these efforts, I could no longer take the physical and mental pain this medication was causing. By early June, my provider discontinued Effexor and transitioned my care to a new medication—Zyprexa.

In hindsight, this period resembled a game of roulette—medication roulette—where each new prescription felt like a spin of the wheel, hoping for relief, fearing the consequences.

Tips for Awareness Regarding Your Prescription Treatment Plan:
Number 1:
I currently was on Lithium, Abilify and Wellbutrin as well as allergy medication at the time I was prescribed Effexor.

Even though both my healthcare provider and pharmacist were aware of this, I was still prescribed Effexor.

Over the years, I have found research indicating that Lithium, Abilify and Wellbutrin as well as allergy medications can have interactions with Effexor.

  • Always check yourself for any drug interactions
  • Even if a reaction is listed as something minor, it may affect you differently.
  • Also be aware that facts on prescription drugs change.
Number 2:

My healthcare provider had me open the capsule and take only five beads for my daily dosage.

What I didn’t know at the time is that Effexor if opened must be taken in its entirety.

  • Even if a capsule can be opened, verify that only a small part can be taken.
  • Verify if you can alter the pill in anyway.
Number 3:

If you are having severe reactions to prescription drugs, question why.

Multiple times I was told that I was just overly sensitive, or the right cocktail had to be found.

  • Do you have a chemical sensitivity to possible preservatives or artificial ingredients?
  • Do you have a hidden illness such as thyroid disease or a gluten problem?
