DEPRESSION

Nikki and Anne Heart September 16, 2025

Do you have depression.

Depression can manifest in many ways, and its signs often vary from person to person. Here’s a breakdown of common symptoms—some emotional, some physical, and some behavioral—that may signal someone is struggling:

Emotional and Cognitive Signs
  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness

Physical and Behavioral Signs
  • Fatigue or decreased energy, even after rest
  • Changes in appetite—either eating too much or too little
  • Sleep disturbances: insomnia or oversleeping
  • Slowed movements or speech, or noticeable agitation
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, and social activities
Additional signs in teens and young adults
  • Irritability or anger more than sadness
  • Academic decline or skipping school
  • Risk-taking behaviors or substance use
  • Feeling misunderstood or overly sensitive

Getting help for depression.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to treating depression. A treatment plan should be tailored to each person’s needs.

  • Talk to a trusted adult
  • Speak with a healthcare provider for options
  • Stay active
  • Get enough sleep
  • Eat healthy
  • Limit social media
  • Spend time with other people
  • Research support groups and therapy programs
