*Although we wrote this post together, we have chosen to present the following through Mom’s eyes.
Recognizing the deep connection between mind and body is essential to our overall well-being.
Yet, because of the stigma that still surrounds mental health, many people struggle to receive the care they truly need.
What often goes unnoticed is how mental illness can directly impact physical health. Globally, poor physical health is a serious concern for those living with mental illness. The gap between mental and physical care remains wide, and too often, healthcare providers fail to address the whole picture. Healing requires collaboration—mental and medical health professionals working hand-in-hand with patients to see the entire picture.
The reality is concerning: Individuals with mental illness face an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, and other serious conditions.
However, these risks are frequently overlooked in treatment plans. Research continues to confirm the undeniable link between mental and physical health, but acknowledgment alone isn’t enough—we need action.
We must begin to demand better integration of care, more awareness, and stronger support systems. Bridging the gap between mental and physical health is not optional—it’s urgent.
The key to a better healthcare system is to recognize the connection between mental and physical health and work toward a future where care is comprehensive and stigma is dismantled.
